After the sudden death of ex-Secret Intelligence Service man Alexander, his wife Alison investigates when mysteries from her husband's past come knocking.

It's 1963, and Alison Wilson returns home to husband Alexander - shortly before his sudden death. Blinded by grief and focusing on comforting her two teenage sons (Gordon and Nigel), Alison is bewildered when a Gladys Wilson arrives at the door, claiming to be Alec's ‘real' wife. Alison sets out on a journey to discover who Alexander Wilson really was, dissecting their 1940s romance and her husband's mysterious career in the secret service.

Alison is on the tail of the elusive Dorothy - finding photographs of her from Alec's stint in India. After speaking to Alec's handler Coleman and hearing that their ‘relationship' was likely a cover story, Alison traces Dorothy to Yorkshire and demands to hear the truth. Back in the 1940s Alison struggles with the aftermath of Alec's decisions, forced to raise her poverty-stricken young family in wartime London.

More desperate than ever to find out the truth, Alison delves further into her shared past with Alec, remembering both the good times and the terrible - and trying to uncover the true depth of her husband's lies. Hearing wildly differing theories from different angles, one painting Alec as a wronged hero, the other as a cruel fantasist, an overwrought Alison is no longer sure who to believe. A final shock revelation inspires a profound and drastic new beginning for her.
