In the small town of Clatterford there is a struggling ladies guild trying to survive while their membership dwindles. Nurse Sal Vine is the lynchpin of the village and a big support to everyone, but she cannot bring herself to join the guild. However, when tragedy strikes, it is enough to change her mind.
Recently widowed Sal decides it's time for her to get rid of her late husband's clothes.
The town comes together to take part in the ancient tradition of 'Beating the Bounds'. The Ladies Guild are in charge of refreshments, but Rosie forgets to order the pasties. During the walk, the Vicar tries to oversee proceedings on the Moor, but his ceremonial outfit keeps getting in the way. Sal and Tip discover that Eileen is adopted.
The Guild enjoys a day out at the beach attempting to 'Boogie Board'.
The Ladies Guild is helping to dress the church ready for Harvest Festival, much to the despair of the grumpy vicar, who complains about the display being just tins and packets. So Rosiegoes to the allotment to find some 'fresh' for the display. She discovers instead a potato with Jesus's face on it. The vicar doesn't agree that the potato could be a calling from God, as why would God call someone like Rosie?
The Ladies Guild is to receive a visit from the Main Wheel of the Guild, who has the power to shut them down.

A year after her husband's death, Sal is finding the anniversary hard to deal with, especially since the rest of her family seem to have forgotten. James continues to run his father's surgery, but his appalling bedside manner causes Sal to attempt some on-the-job training.
Tash is packing her rucksack for Glastonbury, gearing up to climb over the fence. Spike outrages her when it transpires that he has actually bought a ticket. Her son Raph is in tow (reluctantly), complete with fairy wings. Of course, Tash's plan fails, but to call Caroline, who is in the VIP campsite, would be to admit defeat. Caroline has problems of her own, though, trying to stop the Magic Numbers from breaking the swingball set.
Sal has organised a ramble for the whole Guild, seeing it as an opportunity to have a nice stroll and a chat with friends. Sal thinks Spike would be abetter boyfriend for Tash than Marcus and tries to steer Spike towards this goal. Sal and the Guild find themselves lost in a fast-descending impenetrable fog.
The men are disappointed when the annual Clatterford Roundheads v Cavaliers battle re-enactment is cancelled after Health and Safety concerns. It's the Guild to the rescue,though, who come up with an alternative safe plan to save the event; one that includes a giant Soduko and a speed knitting contest. The simmering rivalry between Spike and Marcus over Tash's affections ends in a beer-fuelled clash on the novelty battlefield.
Clatterford Guild's continuing rivalry with the Guild from neighbouring Hole rears its ugly head in the form of a duet of sporting grudge matches - first netball and then crown green bowls, with all pressure on Rosie in the final moments. Meanwhile, Spike has written a love letter to Tash and offered her a dramatic ultimatum - 'leave Marcus and meet me by the Twisty Tree' - or he will give up on their love.
Tash accepts Spike's proposal of marriage and they decide to organise their own unique wedding ceremony. When it all gets a bit too much, a distraught Tash throws herself at Sal's mercy. Secretly delighted to be able to organise her daughter's big day, Sal enlists the help of the guild to create a magical Faerie Wedding by a babbling brook, with bewinged flower fairies, and a final magical send-off party for the happy couple.
Sal discovers an old planning application to convert the barn in the field behind her house and, despite the fact that it is officially too late to object, she enlists the help of the Guild in an effort to stop the development. She enjoys their full support, until Rosie discovers from the developer that the barn will be occupied by none other than Charles Dance. How could the Guild stand in the way of such an illustrious neighbour?Having had her hours cut back at son James' surgery, Sal is running unofficial sessions in her house for those patients too elderly to make it into town, but the comings and goings of various old men arouse the suspicions of Jock, the developer, and Sal finds herself at odds with the community - and very much at odds with Jock.Meanwhile, Tash and Spike remain a firm fixture at Sal's, despite her present of a van to go travelling in, and James causes concern and ridicule in equal measure by letting slip his ambitions to become a local MP.
Caroline is planning a dinner party for husband John and his friends from London. She has the brilliant idea of asking Rosie if she will help out in the kitchen, but Rosie gets the wrong idea and thinks she's invited as a guest. An attempt to put this misunderstanding right via the Vicar only ends up with him making the same mistake.Caroline is forced to enlist Sal's help in case things get out of hand on the night. The dreaded evening turns even more excruciating when train trouble delays John and his guests interminably... Caroline must entertain her village 'guests' single-handedly, but these oddball characters end up helping her to confront an issue that's been troubling her for some time.Meanwhile, Eileen is organising the biennial Guild Fashion Show, but Rosie goes missing with one of the outfits, as does the Vicar, along with the keys to the church - with the essential fashion show props inside. Kate Bales heads to the moor to hunt for him, and finds rather more than she bargained for...
Spike and Tash are finally ready to travel the world in their converted mobile library, but a confusion with the gears leads to a call-out for the emergency services, and Sal's house ends up looking like a war zone. Jock agrees to mend the damage, and the thawing of his previously frosty relationship with Sal continues, much to the amusement of Tip and the disgust of Tash.All bets are off, though, when it is finally revealed that the barn is not being converted for Charles Dance at all - Jock just let Rosie jump to that conclusion to get the Guild off his back. This would be bad enough if Jock hadn't promised the Guild an appearance by Mr Dance as their next (and indeed, first) celebrity speaker.As the entire village gathers to welcome their esteemed guest, Jock must act quickly to save the day - and what remains of his friendship with Sal.
