
Overview
"The Perpetrator" is a 17-episode TV series directed by Chen Li and starring Zhou Li and Peng Yu. It was produced in 2004 and premiered on CCTV's eight prime-time broadcasts on July 18. The play is based on real events and revolves around a traffic accident: On a stormy night, when Ding Wei (played by Zhou Li), deputy editor of "Refeng Editorial Department", was rushing home on an electric bicycle, the rear wheel of the car accidentally knocked down an old man named Zhang Aibao (played by Peng Yu) who was about to cross the road and fled the scene. Witness Hong Hong (Ding Wei's niece) happened to see this scene when she came home from school. She desperately shouted "uncle" but failed to stop Ding Wei, causing the teacher Sima Zebin to be mistaken for the perpetrator. As incidents such as Ding Wei's wife Luo Yanhua's planning of news reports and businessman Li Shaoxiong's failed attempt to hire someone to cover the business occurred one after another, conflicts among family members gradually intensified. The series reflects urban interpersonal relationships and moral dilemmas by showing the parties involved in the accident concealing the truth and family entanglements. In the end, Hong Hong confessed the truth, Ding Wei publicly apologized, and the truth of the incident came to light.
