Overview
At the end of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, Cixi wanted to give the national treasure gold and jade to foreign ministers. However, a treasure theft occurred in the Forbidden City on the night before the treasure was delivered. Wu Tingyu, who was on duty at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and Cheng Wei, the guard of the Qianqing Gate, decided to take the responsibility. Xin Wenyuan, a doctor in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, was ordered to check what was missing, but found that the gold and jade had not been stolen, which meant that the national treasure had been lost abroad. Wu Tingyu's head fell to the ground, but Cheng Wei was unwilling to accept it and led people to search the Xin family. However, Xin Wenyuan had committed suicide by hanging from a beam.
