Kiyoshi Yamashita (Muga Tsukaji) is shivering in the middle of winter at a ski resort, all covered in silver. Kiyoshi, who loves fireworks, is brought in by Okamoto (Leo Morimoto), a shady art dealer who plans to make a profit by showing him fireworks going off in the silver world and having him draw a picture. However, Kiyoshi runs away due to the dullness of the fireworks and the extreme cold. After running away from Okamoto, Kiyoshi heads south in search of a warmer land. He sneaked into the back of a long-distance truck and arrived in Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu. Kiyoshi wanders around the Miyazaki prefectural office, interacting with the governor (Hideo Higashikokubaru) without knowing who he is talking to, and is as hungry as ever. Kiyoshi finally feels depressed and meets Kenichi Yabe (Taketaka Shibuya), a boy munching on bread next to him. As Kiyoshi was eating some bread, the old man from the bakery came over. When I looked, Kenichi was nowhere to be seen. Apparently Kenichi was eating the bread he stole from the old man. Kiyoshi is about to be captured, but with Kenichi's help, he succeeds in escaping. Although he ran away and saw it, Kiyoshi's hunger was not satisfied, and Kenichi was gone. Mitsuko Ohba (Nene Otsuka) runs into Kiyoshi, who is sitting down. Mitsuko invited Kiyoshi to a kamaage udon restaurant to apologize. When Kiyoshi is full and leaves the restaurant with Mitsuko, Kosuke Yabe (Noboru Kaneko) calls out to him. When Mitsuko sees this and runs away, Kosuke yells and tries to chase after her. Kiyoshi decides to stop Kosuke. When Kosuke returns to the house where he runs the shochu maker Yabe Sake Brewery, Ichiko Toyama (Maki Kubota) rushes to greet him. Kosuke's son, Kenichi, is gone. When Kenichi goes to see his father, Shinichiro (Tatsuo Umemiya), he is worried that Kenichi has not been out since he lost his voice recently. Kiyoshi was spreading out his art supplies on Oni's Washboard, a beach on the Aoshima coast known for its strangely shaped rocks. When Kiyoshi hears the origin of the place's name from the street vendor he talks to, he wonders if there really are demons in Miyazaki. Then, Kenichi appeared there. While Kiyoshi is chiding Kenichi about not being a thief, the baker in question comes over. Kiyoshi ran away, this time accompanied by Kenichi. Around that time, Yoneyama Yoneko (Asami Mizukawa), who came to Tokyo for the first time in a while, was informed by the school director (Masahiko Tsugawa) that Kiyoshi had gone on another wandering trip. Yoneko adores Kiyoshi and sees herself as his caretaker...
