Overview
After the first Opium War in 1840, the Qing Dynasty fell into a situation of internal and external troubles. Western powers continued to invade and intimidate. In 1856, Britain and France launched the second Opium War. The Qing Dynasty's national power was declining. Faced with the threat of foreign powers, the reformists in the court, headed by Prince Gong Yixin, proposed to launch the Westernization Movement and take the road of enriching the country and strengthening the army. In 1866, the reformists represented by Zuo Zongtang and Shen Baozhen and the conservatives represented by Empress Dowager Cixi and Wo Ren had repeated and fierce struggles. They withstood pressure from all sides and overcame various difficulties. Finally, they built a shipyard in Mawei, Fuzhou, opened a shipbuilding school, built my country's first ship with the advanced level of the year, and cultivated my country's first generation navy.
