Overview
The story begins in one of the crooked streets of London, where the antique dealer Trent has a shop and a house. He lives here with his granddaughter Nell. The antiquarian constantly borrows large sums of money from the moneylender Quilp, mysteriously disappearing every night and returning exhausted by morning. Nell is worried about this and confides her worries about her grandfather to the only friend she has, the delivery boy Kit.
